Um guia geral, não aconselhamento jurídico — as regras de troca dependem do seu país/estado emissor concreto e mudam com frequência. A "troca direta" abrange normalmente uma lista de reciprocidade (habitualmente toda a UE/EEE + parceiros bilaterais selecionados); todos os outros podem precisar de um exame teórico e/ou prático. Confirme sempre com a autoridade de emissão de cartas do destino antes de terminar a sua janela para conduzir.

Porque é que o prazo importa

A maioria dos países só deixa um novo residente conduzir com a sua carta estrangeira ou internacional durante um período de tolerância — muitas vezes 6 a 12 meses a contar do dia em que passa a residente. Troque-a dentro dessa janela e (num país com reciprocidade) é uma troca de papelada sem exame. Se a perder, a sua carta estrangeira deixa de ser válida para conduzir e tem de passar de raiz todo o exame teórico e prático local. Verifique o seu estatuto de reciprocidade na semana em que chega, não na semana em que expira.
