Visa & entry

Visa-free (60 days) for short visits. To settle you'll need a residence route:

  • Retirement visa (O-A) / LTR Pensioner — Age 50+ with a set income or bank balance; the LTR runs up to 10 years.
  • LTR / Thailand Privilege — Invest or pay a membership fee for a long-stay, low-hassle residence.

Digital-nomad visa: available. DTV (Destination Thailand Visa): 5-year multi-entry for remote workers; ~500,000 THB in savings.

Documents & apostille

Consular legalization required. United States or Thailand is outside the Hague Apostille Convention, so documents need the full legalization chain, not a simple apostille.

Where in United States: Secretary of State of the issuing state (state-level documents) plus the US Department of State, Office of Authentications, for federal documents — official source

↳ Thailand: Not an Apostille state; MFA legalizes the certified translation, so most foreign-language docs must be translated and the translation itself legalized

Driving

No true reciprocity list — any valid foreign licence can be converted, but generally with a written theory test; practical test usually waived for valid foreign licences. IDP/ASEAN & Geneva/Vienna Convention licences accepted for short-term driving. verify country-specific exemptions

Not a clean "exchange": most convert with a written theory test + medical cert + residence cert; practical often waived but not guaranteed. Appointments booked via DLT app (walk-ins gone at most offices). Draft rules (2025, not yet in Royal Gazette) may make the theory test mandatory for all regardless of foreign licence — verify current DLT rules.
