Visa & entry
Visa-free (90 days) for short visits. To settle you'll need a residence route:
- D7 (passive income) visa — Prove stable passive income (pension, rent, dividends) around the minimum wage.
- D2 (self-employed / entrepreneur) — Show a viable business or freelance activity and means to support it.
- Golden Visa — Invest via funds or culture (from €250k–€500k) — real-estate route ended in 2023.
Digital-nomad visa: available, from $4,250/mo income. D8 digital-nomad visa needs ~4x the national minimum wage in monthly income (about €3,680/month in 2026).

Single apostille each end. Both countries are in the Hague Apostille Convention — one apostille from Canada makes your documents valid in Portugal.
Where in Canada: Global Affairs Canada (federal documents + provinces without their own authority) PLUS provincial competent authorities in Ontario, Quebec, Alberta, British Columbia and Saskatchewan — official source

Your path to a passport →Arrival checklist
- Register your address: None (atestado de residência from junta de freguesia obtained as proof when needed)
- Get a tax number: NIF (Número de Identificação Fiscal)
- Residence permit: Título de Residência (AIMA)
- Healthcare: SNS: register at local Centro de Saúde with NIF + residence proof for an utente number; NISS for social security
Get NIF first — it's the gateway to bank account, lease, NISS and everything else; then AIMA residence appointment, then SNS utente. No NIF = nothing moves.
